80 Foot and Above

Does the Boom Lift Brand Affect Rental Cost?

You’ll find three brands, Genie, JLG and Skyjack, most frequently at Pennsylvania rental yards, and the prices are generally comparable for a specific height and a specific power type. 10 Things to Check Before You Accept a Rental Lift Delivery

Would you buy used equipment without checking under the hood? Don't accept a rental lift without checking it either. The lift just arrived on your job site. Before you sign the delivery receipt, spend 15 minutes going over it. One person can run this checklist alone with the driver present, faster with help.
This checklist is applicable to all booms, scissors, and telehandlers, with a few notes on the differences between the equipment types.
How to know if you should take a rental lift? Before signing, inspect for damage; ensure that you have the correct machine and working height; test all controls; ensure all safety devices are working; review inspection records; ensure that fuel/battery level is correct; and ensure that manuals and accessories are included.

1. Check the Machine for Visible Damage

Walk the full perimeter before anything else. Look for:

Not everything you find here is a dealbreaker, and it helps to know the difference. A weld crack you can see daylight through, or one that runs along a stress point rather than a surface scratch, is a structural issue and grounds to refuse the machine. A scuffed paint mark or a bent, non-structural guard panel is cosmetic and usually fine to note and move on from. When in doubt, photograph it and ask the driver directly whether it’s something their shop already logged. Damage that shows up after delivery is easy to argue about. Damage you catch and document before signing isn’t your problem to explain later.

2. Confirm You Received the Correct Model

This sounds obvious, but mismatched deliveries happen more than most renters expect, especially when a supplier is juggling multiple orders on the same route. Check:

A shallow surface cut that doesn’t reach the tire’s internal cording is generally fine to work with for a short rental. A cut deep enough that you can see cording or belt material, or a tire that’s visibly under-inflated on one side compared to the others, is worth flagging before you sign, since either can turn into a flat mid-job on uneven ground. A tire issue caught at delivery is a quick fix for the driver. The same issue discovered mid-job means downtime while you wait for a service call.

4. Test Every Control

Never assume the controls work just because the machine looks fine. Test each one with the delivery driver present:

Delivery Inspection vs Daily Pre-Use Inspection

These two checks aren’t the same thing, and mixing them up leaves a gap in your safety process. The delivery inspection happens once, when the machine arrives. The pre-use inspection happens every single day the lift is on your site, regardless of who delivered it or how long you’ve had it.
Both matter, but only one is a legal requirement. Boom lift operators are required under 29 CFR 1926.453(b)(2)(i) to visually check controls, hydraulics, and safety devices before each day’s use. Scissor lifts fall under the mobile scaffold standard, 29 CFR 1926.451(f)(3), which requires inspection by a competent person before each work shift and after anything that could affect the machine’s structural integrity.
Skipping the delivery inspection puts you at risk of inheriting someone else’s damage. Skipping the daily pre-use inspection is a direct compliance gap under whichever standard applies to your equipment.
