How to Choose the Right Telehandler Rental for Your Job

A telehandler is also known as a reach forklift or a telescopic handler and is a machine that incorporates the lifting power of the forklift and the reach of a crane. It is not the same as a standard vertical mast but is fitted with a telescopic boom that extends vertically and laterally to position loads at a height and distance beyond that of the standard forklift truck.

Typical uses for telehandlers on jobsites include moving pallets of block or roofing material, lifting trusses onto a frame, transporting HVAC equipment to a roof, loading and offloading trucks, and transporting bulk materials across rough terrain. These are used in agricultural operations for bales and feed. Smaller models are used in warehouses and facilities where space is at a premium, for material handling indoors.

What to Consider Before Renting a Telehandler

Choosing the right telehandler rental isn’t about picking the biggest or most powerful machine on the lot. It’s about matching a handful of specifications to your actual job.

1. Required Lift Capacity

Typical telehandlers range in lifting capacity from approximately 5,000 lbs to 12,000 lbs, and can be much larger in some models. The rated capacity on the spec sheet is the greatest at the shortest reach, closest to the machine.

The lifting capacity decreases as the boom moves out and up, sometimes by over 50%. An 8,000 lb at full retraction telehandler may only be capable of half that load at full extension. You must refer to the load chart, not just the headline capacity number, to be sure you’ll know exactly what a machine can lift where you need it lifted.

2. Required Lift Height

Determine the actual desired height, not the platform height on a spec sheet. When loading materials onto a second floor opening, installing trusses on a two story frame or putting equipment on a rooftop, measure the actual height you need to reach and allow for clearance.

3. Forward Reach

Height alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Forward reach, the horizontal distance the boom extends from the machine, matters just as much on plenty of jobs, like placing a load over an obstacle, loading a truck bed from the side, or setting materials on a roof edge you can’t drive under.
Reach and capacity work against each other. The farther out the boom extends, the less weight it can safely carry at that position. A telehandler with an impressive maximum reach number isn’t much use if your actual load exceeds what the chart allows at that distance.

4. Load Charts

Every telehandler has a load chart specific to that model and its current attachment. The chart shows, in a grid, exactly how much weight the machine can safely lift at a given boom angle, height, and extension. It’s not a suggestion. Under OSHA and ANSI requirements, it’s the operating limit, and it’s supposed to be posted and legible in the cab.
Before you commit to a rental, check the load chart against your actual lift, meaning the real weight, height, and reach you’ll be working with, not the machine’s maximum capacity in ideal conditions. If the attachment changes from forks to a bucket or a jib, the chart changes too.

5. Jobsite Terrain

Standard telehandlers will perform well on paved lots, on finished floors and on hard level ground. 10 Things to Check Before You Accept a Rental Lift Delivery

Before you sign the delivery receipt, spend 15 minutes going over it. One person can run this checklist alone with the driver present, faster with help.
This checklist is applicable to all booms, scissors, and telehandlers, with a few notes on the differences between the equipment types.
How to know if you should take a rental lift? Before signing, inspect for damage; ensure that you have the correct machine and working height; test all controls; ensure all safety devices are working; review inspection records; ensure that fuel/battery level is correct; and ensure that manuals and accessories are included.

1. Check the Machine for Visible Damage

Walk the full perimeter before anything else. Look for:
